Saturday at the Mundials was the real beginning of the “Clash of the [BJJ] titans.” The junior blue-belts divisions, the purple-belt male and female open divisions, as well as the brown belts and the lighter-weight black belts (my favorite divisions of course) were on the docket. The bullpen, the stands, and the surrounding areas were flooded with BJJ royalt […]

Later in the day we came up with a plan whereby each fighter from Crazy 88 preparing for a fight would be assigned an assistant who had fought the day before, to make sure they had everything they needed. Mike Fowler vs Marcio Silva.

When I first saw this match back in 2008, in Hawaii.  I had no idea who Mike Fowler was, let alone Team Lloyd Irvin.  During this match, Mike Fowler hits the sweep that Xande did in the Art Suave DVD.  Keeping your base is just one of the fundamentals that is so important in jiu-jitsu, definitely something I need to work on.  I really had no idea about jiu-jitsu.  In fact, as embarrassing as it is, I was a blue belt and had no clue about jiu-jitsu.  That is why I think it is so important to take pride in what you do.  Study your Mixed Martial Art, take the time to learn it’s history.  In my case, I just entered a tournament in Aug. 2006 on a whim and took first place.  After about 6 months, I stopped training all together and didn’t get back into BJJ until July 2008.  Back in full action, I am so thankful for art and I am proud to say that I train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Here at Team Lloyd Irvin, we offer World Class Training.  We have programs for everyone from ages 3 and up.  If you are interested in our program, come and check out our facility.  We are located at 6333 Old Branch Ave. Camp Springs, MD 20748.  Our contact number is 301-449-KICK(5425), give us a call to participate in our 30 Day FREE Trial.  We teach styles such as Muay Thai Kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, and Wrestling.  We also have Womens ONLY classes, so don’t miss out on this opportunity and come check us out!

LLOYD IRVIN MIXED MARTIAL ARTS STILL CLOSED!

Last night, I was watching episodes from the UFC when it first started back in 1993 when Royce Gracie’s was dominating in the UFC. It’s amazing to see the improvements of the sport and the changes it has had throughout the last 17 yrs.  It is now one of the most watched sports on T.V.  Mixed Martial Arts itself is just growing rapidly and soon I am sure MMA will be the number one sport in the World.

Royce Gracie has the longest no holds barred matches and beat 4 opponents in one night.  If you think about it, how many fighters do you now days that could possibly do that?  And, back then, all the rules that they have now were not applied.  Now days in the UFC, you have to wear gloves, no kick and knees to the while on the ground and the list can go on and on.  The sport was so raw, it really kept you on your toes!  Speaking of UFC, Phil Davis makes his MMA debut tonight!  Make sure to check it out, and to get live updates, become of fan of Lloyd Irvin at LLOYDIRVINFANS.COM

One last thing before I go and enjoy the snow outside!! I want to Thank Master Marcos Avellan and Jason for helping me achieve my goal.  I jumped in on their push up challenge and I made it to the end.  Yesterday made 30 days of push ups, I did 40 daily.  It was really a goal within myself that I wanted to achieve.  I wanted to see if I would slack off and get lazy.  Of course there were those days when I was out of town, but I still got the job done!  The rules were that you had to upload your video by midnight every day, and to verify the correct date, you also had to film whatever the latest new was in the world.  I mainly stuck to CNN.  If Jason or myself missed 1 day, we owed Master Marcos $50.  If Master Marcos missed 1 day, he owed us $1,000.  In the end we both received a prize for hanging in there.  I won a FREE Trip to MIAMI and Jason gets to fly with Master Marcos to his next fight and help him corner.  We also get to have dinner with him and a private lesson.  I have never won anything like this before and I am more than Thankful.  So once again, Thank You MM!

One week before the guys headed out to Europeans, Jimmy Harbison and JT “Spider Man” Torres stayed with me to get some BJJ training.  It was Jimmy’s first time training at Lloyd Irvin‘s Mixed Martial Arts in Camp Springs.  He is also new to the Game For Life.  Check out this video, he gets caught a bunch of times!! And this video doesn’t even have all of the other times he got caught in Portugal!

Is it possible to have too much knowledge for…….?

I personally think that it’s impossible to have too much knowledge for something.  We learn new things every day and one should be thankful for that. You can never have enough knowledge for anything, take Mixed Martial Arts for example.  There are so many different arts to begin with, Muay Thai Kickboxing, MMA, Judo, BJJ, Sombo….and the list goes on and on.  Why don’t we just narrow it down to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.  Can a person ever know too much??  Are there people that think they know too much?  Or maybe they think that they are on a different level than they really are.  If you disagree with me, than maybe you are training at the wrong facility.  Here at Lloyd Irvin‘s Mixed Martial Arts, I learn new things every day.

Well, if you are reading this, pay attention!

You are never too good to learn a new technique or to take a class.  Every class that you attend, I can assure you that you will learn something new.  In BJJ there are so many angles, submissions, and positions, I could go on and on.  And in your lifetime, you will never learn everything.  When you have a coach or an instructor who is willing to put time and energy into you, listen and never take it for granted.  It’s no good to try and stop your knowledge from moving forward, how will you ever be the best?  I have seen people sign up for a program and then act like they are too good to take a class.  But when you never want to broaden your knowledge on a specific subject, how do you expect to get better.  Keep that in mind because you are simply being ignorant and ignorance is never better than knowledge.

Mike Fowler, Jt “Spider Man” Torres and Jimmy have arrived in Portugal.  They are relaxed and focusing for tournament time.  Master Lloyd heads out tomorrow to join the guys.  Also don’t forget about Phil Davis, he will be making his MMA debut on Feb. 6, 2010!  Brandon Vera is also getting ready for his upcoming fight.  Like I said before, Team Lloyd Irvin is doing big things this year so don’t miss out!!!  If you want to be a part of this team, come and check us out in Camp Springs Maryland.  Or for more info, go to www.lloydirvin.com.
