  • A Lawyer in Long Beach pt 4 : Clash of the Titans
Saturday at the Mundials was the real beginning of the “Clash of the [BJJ] titans.” The junior blue-belts divisions, the purple-belt male and female open divisions, as well as the brown belts and the lighter-weight black belts (my favorite divisions of course) were on the docket. The bullpen, the stands, and the surrounding areas were flooded with BJJ royalt […]
  • A Lawyer in Long Beach pt 3 : Once the Dust Settled
Later in the day we came up with a plan whereby each fighter from Crazy 88 preparing for a fight would be assigned an assistant who had fought the day before, to make sure they had everything they needed. It was an honor to be able to assist, in what little way I could, in a teammates’ preparations. SEVEN (7) Lloyd Irvin competitors became World Champions on […]

-Jon Delbrugge- In today’s mainstream MMA we have an oversaturation of the blood splattering, lightning bolt, tribal tattoo designed logo appeal to it. Jim Harbison, one of Team Lloyd Irvin’s Newest Members placed first.  Having 2 matches, he submitted both of his opponents by armbar.  Jim Harbison will be competing in Pan Ams on the weekend of April 8-11th and he is looking forward to Mundials as well.

Why do people start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?  What does it do for your body, mind or soul? For some a hobby, for some, it’s a lifestyle.  Here it from these BJJ practitioners first hand.  I asked a few people including BJJ Black Belt Mike Fowler, JT Torres, why they started, here what they have to say.

Erika Dailey: BJJ White Belt, 2nd degree Black Belt in Karate, 1st degree Black Belt in Tae Kwondo.

“I knew nothing about a fight after it hits the ground.  I figured, if I was in an actual fight, if we went to the ground, it would be a complete mystery to me.  When I first saw people training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, I thought to myself, I have to do this! It was a whole new world to me.”

Mason Welch: BJJ Brown Belt

“I like the marital art of it, and I wanted to learn how to fight!  My older brother beat me with Jiu-Jitsu techniques for about a year.  Every time my brother came home and would use his techniques, I would be lost and wondering what this Mixed Martial Art was.  So, I tried it out, and after my first class, I loved it!”

Mike Fowler: BJJ Black Belt

“I first joined the gym after a friend started showing me a few moves at my local high school wrestling club.  I did it for a sport and fell in love with the Art.  I had no reason for starting down this path but really happy I did!”

JT Torres: BJJ Black Belt, Black Belt in Karate.

“I started Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu because my father wanted me to stay in shape, and I was cut from the Basket Ball team my freshman year of high school.”

Jim Harbison: BJJ Brown Belt

“I wrestled before high school, then the high school(catholic) I went to didn’t have a wrestling team.  So half way through my freshman year, my dad told me to try Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu after I tried it, it took over my life!  I absolutely loved it.”

So what is your reason for starting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?  Everyone has great stories, and it’s great to share them.  I started Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu on the North Shore of Oahu with Kai Garcia and Marcelo Steenhagen.  I didn’t know much about Jiu-Jitsu, I entered my first tournament on a whim, and won!  I went back to my first loved sport, soccer, then finally returned to jiu-jitsu.  After traveling to Guam, Philippines, Japan, then all the way to the east coast, Maryland.  I found the place where I belonged to train at, Lloyd Irvin’s Mixed Martial Arts, the rest is history….in the making.

Saturday Morning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class up at Crazy 88!

The training was great as well as the atmosphere, everyone always welcomes you with open arms!  Lloyd Irvin’s Mixed Martial Arts was closed today, The Sporty Girl Fitness Tour is being held there with Basheera Ahmed and Vicki Irvin.  Also, a quick reminder, the school will be closed on Monday for the Holiday.  All classes will be back to the regular schedule on Tuesday, Feb. 16.  I hope everyone has enjoyed the snow because it’s back to training!!

A big group from our school drove up to get some training in!  Everyone warmed up, stretched and then we did a little bit of what we call, The Guard Passing Game.  Everyone lines up, about 5 people are on their backs, you get a partner and you go until you sweep them, or if they pass your guard.  Once someone scores, that round is done and whoever wins, they stay in.

After that Julius had everyone start sparring.  It’s great to see the different technique and styles at the affiliate schools.  It also gives you a chance to test out what you have been working on and drilling at your school.  Also, Mike Fowler will be teaching a seminar at Crazy 88 on Feb. 20, if you want to learn some great techniques from our Lloyd Irvin Black Belt, Mike Fowler, then don’t miss out!

DJ Jackson, Ron “The Choir Boy” Stallings, Mike “The Hulk” Easton, Timothy Woods, and JC Cuffee will be traveling to Tennessee this weekend to fight in the MMA Gameness Fighting Championships!  If you have seen any of the videos, the guys have been training hard.  Doing their 6 a.m. workouts, their strength and conditioning.  If you haven’t seen any of the footage, check out WWW.LLOYDIRVINLIVE.COM and see what our MMA guys have been up to.  Even through the Snow Blizzard, no excuses, they did their workout.

For more info on our program and how to train Muay Thai Kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and MMA for 30 Days FREE, check out www.30FREEdays.com. We also offer Kids classes(ages 3+), women’s only classes and a Kick N Fit program that will help you lose weight. Give us a call at 301-449-5425 and we’ll be happy to assist you.

Enjoy your Presidents Day Weekend!

While watching Jiu-Jitsu videos today, I decided to check the CNN News online.  MORE SNOW!  What in the world is going on?  And, it’s supposed to snow again on Monday.  My first time being in a blizzard and I am not enjoying it!  It’s one thing to hang around the house, but it’s another when you are stuck!  Great job to all of you who are working out and doing everything possible to keep sane!

Check out my quick workout with BJJ Black Belt Mike Fowler.  We have no equipment so we had to make do.  Mike Fowler and I did 3, 6 minute rounds.

Grapplers Quest does a Radio Questionnaire for Master Lloyd Irvin and he holds nothing back.  To listen, click HERE.

Master Lloyd is truly an inspiration to me and everyone else who is a part of Team Lloyd Irvin.  Anyone who has a Mixed Martial Arts Academy out there and you are looking for advice, here what Master Lloyd has to say.  And, like he says in the interview, he is out there just trying to help uplift everyone, he just wants to help people learn.  And he has, Master Lloyd has created multiple World Champions in Gi and No Gi such as JT Torres, Willie Leonard, and DJ Jackson.

Both coming from wrestling backgrounds, DJ Jackson and Willie Leonard are a BJJ Blue belts under Master Lloyd.  They have closed out many divisions together and are both striving to reach that number one spot on the stand at the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Championships in June.  Willie Leonard recently won the Abu Dhabi Pro Trials in Florida, securing a spot at the Abu Dhabi Tournament in April, just one week after Pan Ams.  DJ Jackson has a MMA fight coming up on Feb. 20 along with Timothy Woods, Ron “The Choir Boy” Stallings, Mike “The Hulk” Easton, and JC “Lateman” Cuffee.  These are just a few of Lloyd Irvin’s upcoming stars.  Remember, there are always people coming up in your gym, so remember to help and support them just as your teammates helped you.  Make sure to keep an eye out for these guys, here at Team Lloyd Irvin we are doing big things this year! So keep up the hard work and great training!
