  • A Lawyer in Long Beach pt 4 : Clash of the Titans
Saturday at the Mundials was the real beginning of the “Clash of the [BJJ] titans.” The junior blue-belts divisions, the purple-belt male and female open divisions, as well as the brown belts and the lighter-weight black belts (my favorite divisions of course) were on the docket. The bullpen, the stands, and the surrounding areas were flooded with BJJ royalt […]
  • A Lawyer in Long Beach pt 3 : Once the Dust Settled
Later in the day we came up with a plan whereby each fighter from Crazy 88 preparing for a fight would be assigned an assistant who had fought the day before, to make sure they had everything they needed. It was an honor to be able to assist, in what little way I could, in a teammates’ preparations. SEVEN (7) Lloyd Irvin competitors became World Champions on […]

  • STRIKEFORCE: Heavy Artillery Review
-Jon Delbrugge- In today’s mainstream MMA we have an oversaturation of the blood splattering, lightning bolt, tribal tattoo designed logo appeal to it. Last nights Strikeforce event was a great one to watch, so I hope you didn’t miss it.  For those Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fans, I am sure you were routing for Andre Galvao, who won his Strikeforce debut over Luke Stewart by split decision.  As for the females, Miesha Tate also showed domination over Zoila Frausto, and her jiu-jitsu skills!  These 2 females had a battle last night at the 135lb division.  Tate is all about take downs, and she didn’t stop.  Zoila had some good kicks and punches, but she couldn’t defend the takes downs.  After Tate took Frausto down several times, she finally got to mount and submitted Frausto with an armbar.  I think it was one of the best fights of the night.

I give credit to these females in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA because most people look down upon women who do the sport, or they think that we are not capable of it.  But I think women train just as hard as the men.   Also, women can do Mixed Martial Arts and still be feminine.

It’s funny, because being a female and training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu requires a lot more preparation/upkeep.  As for females like myself, I have long hair and it gets in the way… A LOT!  As I was looking on the forum there was actually a post about Long Hair and BJJ.  I have tried several different methods to keeping my hair tied back, and it always comes out one way or another and/or gets messy.  What I find best that works is a pony tail with a braid!

Don’t forget tonight we are watching the UFC 11 St. Pierre vs. Hardy here at Lloyd Irvin’s Mixed Martial Arts.  Make sure to stop by and watch it with the Team, it’s gonna be a great night of fights!

Saturday Morning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class up at Crazy 88!

The training was great as well as the atmosphere, everyone always welcomes you with open arms!  Lloyd Irvin’s Mixed Martial Arts was closed today, The Sporty Girl Fitness Tour is being held there with Basheera Ahmed and Vicki Irvin.  Also, a quick reminder, the school will be closed on Monday for the Holiday.  All classes will be back to the regular schedule on Tuesday, Feb. 16.  I hope everyone has enjoyed the snow because it’s back to training!!

A big group from our school drove up to get some training in!  Everyone warmed up, stretched and then we did a little bit of what we call, The Guard Passing Game.  Everyone lines up, about 5 people are on their backs, you get a partner and you go until you sweep them, or if they pass your guard.  Once someone scores, that round is done and whoever wins, they stay in.

After that Julius had everyone start sparring.  It’s great to see the different technique and styles at the affiliate schools.  It also gives you a chance to test out what you have been working on and drilling at your school.  Also, Mike Fowler will be teaching a seminar at Crazy 88 on Feb. 20, if you want to learn some great techniques from our Lloyd Irvin Black Belt, Mike Fowler, then don’t miss out!

DJ Jackson, Ron “The Choir Boy” Stallings, Mike “The Hulk” Easton, Timothy Woods, and JC Cuffee will be traveling to Tennessee this weekend to fight in the MMA Gameness Fighting Championships!  If you have seen any of the videos, the guys have been training hard.  Doing their 6 a.m. workouts, their strength and conditioning.  If you haven’t seen any of the footage, check out WWW.LLOYDIRVINLIVE.COM and see what our MMA guys have been up to.  Even through the Snow Blizzard, no excuses, they did their workout.

For more info on our program and how to train Muay Thai Kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and MMA for 30 Days FREE, check out www.30FREEdays.com. We also offer Kids classes(ages 3+), women’s only classes and a Kick N Fit program that will help you lose weight. Give us a call at 301-449-5425 and we’ll be happy to assist you.

Enjoy your Presidents Day Weekend!

What long day…Just got back to the hotel after being at The Abu Dhabi Trials all day.  Willie Leonard won his division with 2 fights.  After that, I was up and I had 3 matches.

My first opponent was a blue belt and I won by points.  My second match was against brown belt, Sofia Amaramte.  I had her in a triangle and submitted her with the straight arm lock.  Next up was the finals, and I had Hillary Williams who is also a brown belt.  I was very nervous to fight her but as soon as we shook hands, all that went away…I ended up taking second place losing to Hillary by points.

About 2 hours later Willie’s absolute division started.  He had 6 matches in the absolute division.  He stuck to his game plan and won it!  First place prize, all expenses paid trip to Abu Dhabi.

All in all it was a awesome day, you win some and you lose some.  It was a great experience fighting against the brown belts today.  I learned a lot from it, and it’s always hard to travel without your coach.  But learning to fight without them is something you have to do, because they can’t always be there.

Tomorrow Willie and I head back to Camp Springs and it’s back to BJJ Training.  Next weekend, Master Donnie, Head Instructor of the kids program will be taking the kids and I up to NAGA in Rhode Island.  Stay tuned to see what’s going on in Camp Springs at Lloyd Irvin’s Mixed Martial Arts.  To see the updates on how the guys did in Portugal, check out LLOYDIRVINFANS.COM

GO TEAM LLOYD IRVIN!!!

What is your policy for stink gis on the mat?  Does your school allow it?  Or do students at your school do it and friends cover up for them, or simply don’t say anything….

Here at Lloyd Irvin’s Mixed Martial Arts, some one Will and Should rat you out in a second.  First and foremost, it’s absolutely disrespectful to even step on the mat with a stink gi!  Let alone, be someones partner and be smelling like that.

In Brazilian JiuJitsu, having the gi on tends to make you sweat, a lot!  Rolling with people, making contact with other stink and sweaty gis can be a nasty combination.  Secondly, it can cause ringworm, staph and or any other skin fungus or disease.  In BJJ, people need to keep their nails clipped, and also take care of any scratches or open wounds.  Basically, any untreated scratches or cuts can get infected causing skin conditions that can lead to ringworm. Staphylococcus (pronounced: staf-uh-low-KAH-kus) aka staff is a normal skin germ and can cause infection, and if not treated properly, may cause death.  Ringworm is much more easy to treat.

You should always keep your mats clean as well.  The mats in a facility should be cleaned daily to prevent any germs.  SO, if you know of anyone who has a smelly gi, and or has open cuts, make sure they are taking the proper steps to keeping germ free. I have added this picture, it is one of our signs hanging up in the main mat area in our gym!

I have also included my video from the Push Ups Challenge, today is Day 13!
