  • A Lawyer in Long Beach pt 4 : Clash of the Titans
Saturday at the Mundials was the real beginning of the “Clash of the [BJJ] titans.” The junior blue-belts divisions, the purple-belt male and female open divisions, as well as the brown belts and the lighter-weight black belts (my favorite divisions of course) were on the docket. The bullpen, the stands, and the surrounding areas were flooded with BJJ royalt […]

Later in the day we came up with a plan whereby each fighter from Crazy 88 preparing for a fight would be assigned an assistant who had fought the day before, to make sure they had everything they needed. Team Lloyd Irvin is ready for battle!!  We leave for Pan Ams on Wednesday, this time next week we will be watching the black and brown belts tear it up!  Today was a great last Saturday practice.  Master Lloyd had everyone working on their grip fighting in the beginning.  After that he had the guys do a short Team Challenge, BJJ Black Belts Mike Fowler and Marcos Torregrosa.  They had to pick their teams.  The matches were only 3 minutes each, and everyone had to push hard!  In the end, Mike Fowler’s team lost which consisted of Mike Fowler, Mike Easton, Nyjah Easton, Frank Camacho, Sijara Eubanks, Aneene Wynn and Jacob.  Marcos and his team took the victory which was JT Torres, Jim Harbison, Kenny, Arthur, Karen Fong, and Jeremy West.

Marcos will be headed back to California tomorrow, he is focused and ready for the Abu Dhabi Tournament next week.  Another representative form our school will be going to compete as well, BJJ Blue Belt Willie Leonard.  It was a pleasure having Marcos here training in Camp Springs.  Here is an interview I did with him, Enjoy and Thank You Marcos, we will see you soon!

1. Marcos, can you explain a little bit about yourself?

I am a black belt under Cassio Werneck and have been training for about 10 years. In that time I have been fortunate enough to learn from many masters and train with many teams. I am incredibly dedicated to the art of BJJ and I train 2 times a day monday through saturday. I also boxed in Puerto Rico as a kid but BJJ was and is my obsession.

2. When did you first start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and why?

I had an experience with MMA when the UFC went to Puerto Rico. It was crazy!! I was hooked on the idea but at the time there were no schools in PR. It just so happened I had a cousin in California that offered me a job to make some money for the summer. I started looking for schools to feed this obsession with anything BJJ and found one 4 miles from my house!! I started July 27th 1999…. I remember to the day because I knew from then on what I wanted to do with my life!

3. What is your most memorable moment in your jiu-jitsu career?

There have been a lot! I have won many tournaments but I feel that one of the best feelings was to see a group of my students go out and destroy at a tournament. Out of 10 guys, we had 4 first place, 2 second place and 1 third. Man I was so proud of them! It is a great feeling to see that all the work that I have put in to develop individual gameplan’s and to prepare them physically paid off. That was a feeling much greater than winning any tournament.

4. What do you like to do on your free time?

Hang out with my kids! I have 2 kids, my son is 2 and my daughter is 8. I am a big fool for my kids and love acting the fool with them. Teaching BJJ has provided me with a fantastic schedule to be able to be a great father. I also like to dance with my wife.We haven’t been out recently because I have been training so hard for tournaments but I will make it up to her! The only time I have for myself I use to watch BJJ tournament footage. I usually fall asleep on the couch watching footage.

5. What are your goals for the year of 2010?

Compete as much as possible!! I came to Master Lloyd to receive top-notch training and have been very impressed with the level I found. With his help I plan to compete in everything possible and hope to torture all the light weight competitors around the world. I want to close out ADCC Pro, worlds, nationals , us open, GQ, and whatever they put in front of me. Keep your eyes peeled because this year I’m going to run through walls!

6. Currently you are teaching in Sacramento, can you tell me a little bit about your school and what programs you have?

We have classes Monday through Saturday. We also have Judo classes taught by Team Sacramento on Tuesday and Thursday nights. We have a number of children that participate in our classes but we have not yet separated them from the adult classes. We just opened the school last year and I hope to develop more classes as the class size increases.

I want to Thank everyone who made this training possible, Lloyd Irvin, Mike Fowler, JT Torres, Jim Harbison and Tracey Goodell.  They welcomed me into their home and Academy to me with open doors and nothing but positive attitudes.  Being able to train with these top Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Practitioners is an absolute honor.  I look forward to Training here in Camp Springs more often and you will definitely see me in the near future!  Also, if you are ever in the Sacramento area, come and check me out at Capital City BJJ.

Growing up I was always worried that I had to go to college and make my family proud.  I got caught up in always making everyone else happy that I was unhappy with my life.  Living up to my families expectations wasn’t working out for me.  I tried college, and it was enjoyable for a while, but it just wasn’t for me at the time.  Shortly after leaving college on a soccer scholarship, I found that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was the thing for me.  I knew it could keep me in shape, and I always wanted to be a competitor. The hardest part of it all is being so far from family, but this IS what I wanted to do and I needed to be happy.

Currently a blue belt and training at Lloyd Irvin’s Mixed Martial arts in Camp Springs Maryland.  I have found happiness and I am living the life.  Working as an Assistant/Front Desk Manager for Lloyd Irvin, I get to train 24/7 and there is nothing more I could ask for.  Competing and traveling the world, meeting new people and making life long friends is my dream come true.

When I first came to visit Lloyd Irvin’s, I was astonished by the World Class Training that I needed to take action.  This meant relocating about 8,000 miles across the world from Guam to Maryland.  Talk about opposite weather, new people, and a completely different lifestyle.  I wanted to stay in shape and become a World Champion, and I am doing everything possible to make that happen.  Even when my time is up as far as competing, I can always teach Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.  I can help and give back to Team Lloyd Irvin, just as it gave to me. Moving to Camp Springs to pursue my dreams is ‘hands down’ one of the best decisions I have ever made.

So how can you get Life Long Success and Happiness?  Perhaps doing something that you love!  Come and check us out today or give us a call at 301-449-5425(KICK).  Ask about our 30 Day FREE Trial, we offer Muay Thai Kickboxing, MMA, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling, Womens ONLY classes, and kids classes.

Happy New Year!!!!! Welcome 2010!

I hope everyone had a Happy and Safe New Year!  I spent the evening with my family from the gym.  Great way to bring in the New Year.  I am already thinking about the goals that I want to achieve as far as my Brazilian JiuJitsu career.  The list seems never ending, just like jiujitsu, the amount of techniques you can learn and the knowledge of the art is never ending.  Just a year ago, I was here training at Lloyd Irvin’s Mixed Martial Arts for the first time.  I was also only here for a 2 week vacation.  Shortly after I realized that this is where the champions are made, and if I ever planned on being the best, this is where I need to be!  One year later, I am an employee as well as a student under Master Lloyd and things couldn’t be better.  I just can’t believe how fast time flies!  World’s is only 6 months away, and it will be here in no time.  And in this year of being here at Camp Springs, people asked me if I have improved, why haven’t I been promoted?  I just simply explain to them that when it’s my time to be promoted, I will.  But the next belt(purple) is not what I am focused on.  It’s the Black Belt, that is the ultimate goal and everything else that happens along the way, the belts that I earn are just minor bumps along the way.  Not only do I want to get my Black Belt, but I want to win, I want to be the best at the Black Belt level and beat all of the known females.  As far as improvement, of course!  I still have so much to learn, but in the short amount of time that I have been here, I have improved so much….on and off the mats.  I can never say it enough, JiuJitsu saved my life.

Do you have a list of goals for 2010? Whether it be BJJ, MMA, your job or anything.  Are you trying to eat better, change your diet?  Making a list of goals is a good thing, because a goal is not a goal until you write it down.  Other than that, it’s just an idea.  If you haven’t already started one, it’s never too late.

Have a Great Year, keep up the hard training! Don’t forget to write your goals down!

Thanksgiving of 2008 I was in Japan competing at the Asian Open. I won my division, then I competed in the absolute. For my first match, I had this really heavy girl! I ended up tweaking my lower back. I went to several different chiropractors. No one knew what was wrong. After we got back to Guam from Japan, I was out of work for 2 weeks. After those 2 weeks of resting I was back at it. Training and working. My back was not fully healed. Christmas time rolled around and Mike and I headed to Camp Springs. During this time, there was also a Team Training @ Lloyd Irvin’s Mixed Martial Arts. Being the stubborn person that I am, I could not help it but train. The following day was the women’s team training. Of course, my back was aching from the day before, I was done!  I would take time off for a week or so and then be right back on the mats! I could not get enough of training!! I ended up being out for 1 year!! Yes, I trained once in a while, but as far as competing, I was done. If I had only taken the time off and let my body heal, I probably would not have been out that long.  So my advice to anyone that has injuries….Take the time off and let your body heal!!! In the long run it can really help. To this day, I still do not know exactly what is wrong. I did find an awesome chiropractor who has helped me out more than ever. There’s nothing worse than having to sit on the side of the mat and not be able to train, so treat your body right!
