Saturday at the Mundials was the real beginning of the “Clash of the [BJJ] titans.” The junior blue-belts divisions, the purple-belt male and female open divisions, as well as the brown belts and the lighter-weight black belts (my favorite divisions of course) were on the docket. The bullpen, the stands, and the surrounding areas were flooded with BJJ royalt […]
  • A Lawyer in Long Beach pt 3 : Once the Dust Settled
Later in the day we came up with a plan whereby each fighter from Crazy 88 preparing for a fight would be assigned an assistant who had fought the day before, to make sure they had everything they needed. It was an honor to be able to assist, in what little way I could, in a teammates’ preparations. SEVEN (7) Lloyd Irvin competitors became World Champions on […]

JT Torres know what its like to lose by an advantage, or even a 0-0 match.

Last year in his final match at the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Championships, JT Torres faced Bruno Amorin.  At the belt rank of a brown belt, the match is 9 minutes long, the score was 0-0 and JT went for an armlock, and the referee gives no advantages and the match ends 0-0 ref’s decision.  Of course the American doesn’t win the ref over, and JT loses taking second place because of the refs decision.

Shortly after, JT Torres promoted to BJJ Black Belt knew it was time to step up his game.  Coming into the year of 2010, Master Lloyd, Mike Fowler, JT Torres, Jim Harbison and a few of the other guys from Team Lloyd Irvin traveled to Portugal for the European Open Championships.  JT made to the semi-finals to face the Alliance member Michael Langhi, who won every tournament he entered in the year of 2009.

In the start of the match, JT pulled guard which Langhi got an advantage off of.  Then JT swept Langhi, Laghi swept him back and the match was a tough one.  In the end, JT loses by 1 advantage, and Michael Langhi split the win with fellow teammate Lucas Lepri.  To have something so close, but a loss is a loss and that is why JT had been working so hard and those advantages can be critical.  Of course always looking for the submission, but when you are losing a match on points, or advantage, you have to play smart, play to win!

JT Torres has come a long way and he isn’t stopping. With goals of winning the Pan American Games, and the World Championships.  He is training harder than ever, physically and mentally.  He is preparing his mind for these upcoming competitions.  He is bringing the heat, and not going to settle for the refs decision, he’ll fight to the end.

Here is a few words from JT Torres:

“Watch out for Team Lloyd Irvin to make a mark in the year of 2010.  It’s the strongest American Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Team that will take some gold medals at Pan Ams, Brasileiros and Mundials.”

The sun is shining and the snow is melting slowly but surely!  Today was the first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training since last week Thursday.

For the BJJ class, Master Lloyd and Mike Fowler got straight to rolling!  Frank, Lenny, and Anene warmed up and jumped in there as well.  The MMA guys got their sparring in with Coach Tom Zurita.

Last week, Mike Fowler, DJ Jackson, Willie Leonard, Frank Camacho and I went up to Crazy 88 in Elkridge to get some training and I hurt my groin.  Unfortunately, I need to take the time to rest and let it heal.  Any more training could possibly tweak it more! Injuries to your groin muscles can occur when the muscles are over stretched due to quick movement changes.  Make sure to listen and take care of your injuries.

Check out Master Lloyd Irvin rolling with Mike Fowler and Frank “The Crank” Camacho.

Lloyd Irvin’s Mixed Martial Arts Academy is still closed!  Practice will be held tomorrow around12 noon.  So make sure you show up, ON TIME!

I have this website bookmarked on my computer and it is called stumble.  Every time you click the button a new website pops up.  You also have the option to choose which topics you want the browser to search.  As I was on it today, there were some photos that I came across that were from Shibuya, Japan.  It reminded me of when I went to Japan in 2008 with the team from Guam to compete in the Asian Open.

The Asian Open was the first big tournament that I had ever competed in.  JT Torres came out a few days before we left and he stayed with us.  We got some good training in and he got acclimated to the weather/time before we headed out to Japan.  We brought a fairly big team with us that year, and I know this year, 2009 they had at least 30+ guys.   It’s nice to have such a large group going to international tournaments and competing.   Now only if we could get a group that big to make it down to Brazil.  In about 2 weeks, there is a large group of guys from Team Lloyd Irvin heading out to Europeans!  That will be exciting, I can’t wait to see what happens!

I was only 1 of 2 females who went along on the trip to compete.  This year 3 of the Purebred/Lloyd Irvin girls went and competed.  The day before the tournament, we got to train at Purebred Omiya which was really neat.  When we arrived at the Purebred Academy in Omiya, it was nice to see that they had a Team Lloyd Irvin sticker right there on the front door.  They welcomed us with open arms, and let us train as long as we wanted.

We stayed at an awesome hostel Asakusa, and being that we had so many teammates, we took up the whole floor.  The food was great and so was the sight seeing.  We went to this bathhouse that was awesome, I am wishing I was in it right now to soak my back in.  They had these vending machines that sold hot coffee, cocoa, and this corn soup in a can!  These vending machines were also about 15 ft. away from one another, they were everywhere, oh and not to mention all of the crepe stands!

All together the trip was great! I won my division and lost my second match in the absolute. Mike Fowler won the absolute division, fighting Marcos de Souza in the finals. The team took 3rd place overall. This year the team won 1st place overall! It was an honor to train and compete in the Land of the Rising Sun.  Also, to see where the martial art originated from.  If you have never been there, I would recommend taking a trip, and also try to fit in some Brazilian JiuJitsu training as well.

At Team Lloyd Irvin Headquarters in Camp Springs Maryland we are heavy into planning for the 2010 competition season.  I’m beginning to meet with our Combat Athletes, Combat Gold members and our competition team members.

Right now I’m forcing everyone to work on their throws.  Tonight we worked on the Spinning grip break to double leg attack.  Grip fighting is one of the most neglected aspects in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and a rarely practiced “art form” that I’m trying hard to get my students to love it.  Once you add effective grip fighting it will change your entire game.

How many throws do you know?  How many throws can you actually pull of in a tournament? and what level are the guys that you can make it work against?  When we add techniques, we’re adding in order to make them work at the Black Belt level.  There is no need to prepare to make a technique work against a blue or purple belt.

I have all of my different students working on different throws, all of the beginners working on Drop Seo’ and all of my wrestling I’m teaching the funky russian throws.

The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training in our advance classes looks alot like Judo these days.  To mix things up in the off season we’ve been holding mock/modified judo competitions in the school, the students love it.

Speaking about competitions, at Lloyd Irvin’s Martial Arts Academy no student is forced to compete.  We offer classes for students of all levels, students that want to compete, students that don’t want to compete, students that want to fight and students that don’t want to compete.

No matter what your goal is, we offer programs for anyone and everyone.

At the end of class tonight, everyone had a good hold of the basic concepts of the spinning double leg technique.

Tomorrow in our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Classes we’re going to continue working our 90 day plan, and adding the grip fighting sequences and throws.

If you’ve been skipping class, get your butt in the room so you don’t miss out.

Go Team Lloyd Irvin
