For 2010, I plan to rebuild the women’s team here at Lloyd Irvin’s Mixed Martial Arts. So if you are a female and interested in MMA, BJJ, Muay Thai Kickboxing, we are open to anyone who wants to train.
Being that MMA is becoming more accepted in the world, more Women will continue to do it also, and the same goes for Brazilian JiuJitsu. Any female who has an interest in fighting or mixed martial arts should get into it now! The sport is growing and soon enough, it will probably be the biggest sport worldwide.
Kelsey Desanti was Team Lloyd Irvin‘s first female to fight in MMA. Kelsey started mixed martial arts at the age of 16 and she has also started brazilian jiujitsu here at the academy. She had a goal to fight MMA, she stuck to her plan, made her debut and showed what Team Lloyd Irvin has to offer. If you want to check out where Kelsey trained, click here.
We also have Kerry Vera who is Brandon Vera’s wife. She recently fought Kim Couture making her debut in Strikeforce, knocking her out in the first round. I was actually fortunate enough to go out and train with Kerry and work on her ground and pound for that fight. She is a very talented martial artist and you should definitely keep your eye for this upcoming female. Kerry is a humble and down to earth person who is really set on her goals and a strong person. She is a great example for women in MMA.
Make sure to check out these video’s on Kelsey and Kerry.
Did any of you happen to catch the UFC 108 last night?! I sure did, along with some of the guys from the team. If not, you should definitely check it out. The main event was Rashad Evans vs Thiago Silva. They were both undefeated, and both of them have also lost to Lyoto Machida by knockout. Rashad was the winner last night by unanimous decision. It just goes to show that if you are not in shape, and your cardio is not where it’s supposed to be, then you can and will end up losing. Cardio plays a big factor in mixed martial arts. This year I plan to work on my cardio a lot more, it’s on my list of goals for 2010.
My goal is to make my opponent tired. I want to be in total control of my matches, I don’t want to be playing catch up the whole time. Especially for World’s, the biggest Brazilian JiuJitsu tournament. In some weight divisions you can have 8, 9, 10 matches! You are NOT making it to the finals with no cardio/strength and conditioning.
I remember when I used to play soccer and the workouts we would have to do. First we would have tryouts(which was the hardest part of all), and whether or not you were on the team the year before, you’d have to try out again. The position I played required running the entire game. I was the wing, and played on the left side. During college I played striker, and I did very well. We did sprints, 1:15′s, ladders, cones, and stairs, you name it we did it.
Now I have a whole new type of conditioning that I have to do for Brazilian JiuJitsu.
Check out this video of my teammate Brandon Vera and his workout!
