  • Running a Large Martial Arts School vs. a Small One
I’ve had the opportunity to be a student at “small” academies that grew into big ones and also have had the good fortune of watching my own Howard County Martial Arts academy develop into a “big” school as well.  One thing that I’ve noticed is how different it is to run a successful big program [...] […]
  • Whats Up with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Associations?
So what are these benefits? Firstly, joining a reputable associations is a good way for the new member to get the recognition and reputation of the association without necessarily being of the same quality. Imagine a school that does not have any history of producing competitors and also lacks an instructor with solid credentials; the school owner would grea […]
  • Five Mistakes BJJ Beginners Make Dealing with Losses
At our Baltimore martial arts school, we like to have an active competition team in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, No-Gi, Thai boxing, and MMA.  Of course, if you compete, you will inevitably lose.  And like everyone has told you, its what happens after the loss that is important.  So let’s look at five common errors beginners make [...] […]
  • Founded in 1998 – So What?
Customers find comfort in the fact that a business has been in existence for a long time. This is apparently a mark of dependability and continual success and so one feels comfortable developing a relationship with the proprietor with less worry that the business will undergo some bizarre twist of fate that causes it [...] […]
  • Go After Titles, Not People
Some of the best advice I ever received from Lloyd Irvin was regarding rivalries. To many times, competitors get focused on a single opponent rather than focusing on the big picture.  A common situation would be as follows: Adam loses to Bill.  Adam then focuses all his efforts on beating Bill.  He trains with Bill in [...] […]
  • How to Watch Competition Footage
Since everyone is snowed in and is supposedly working out at home and watching a lot of film, I thought I could provide some tips on watching competition footage that have helped me out over the years. In the beginning, I could not watch Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competition videos and preferred instructional videos; nowadays, its the other way [...] […]
  • One Reason Competition is Important…
Competition is important because it helps keep BJJ instructors honest. Every instructor has a different set of criteria from one another and most likely, a different set of criteria for each belt.  For example, some instructors use an attendance system for some of the early belts while others focus primarily on competition results.  This often causes [...] […]
  • Bullfighting & Jiu Jitsu by Brian Neal pt 2
Continued from yesterday’s post by one of Children’s Martial Arts coaches, Brian Neal… I think another similar aspect is the preparation required for each.  There isn’t any training manual or book you can read that will prepare you for what you will encounter when you get on your first bull or fighting in your first advanced [...] […]
  • Bullfighting & Jiu Jitsu by “Rodeo” Brian Neal pt 1
In a previous life, I used to ride bulls, in part for fun and in part for many. I think you might find it interesting if I shared my thoughts about how the two are similar. While I am not suggesting to anyone that if you can or are willing to do Jiu Jitsu, you should run out and jump on the first bull you see, but I hope to give you alittle insight into how […]
  • Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery…
Now I don't know if VW Golfs are good are bad but the point is made - if everyone seems intent on just copying something - there must be something to the original! For an example right from our BJJ school - ever notice how every gi is compared to a Koral (the original "luxury" gi) and every light gi is compared to Vulkan (the original gi sold […]

SO, I have been slacking a little bit on the blog, but I promise videos will be up soon!  I have a surprise coming soon for all of you reading this, so stay tuned!  I also haven’t been to the chiropractor in a while and I need to get back on it Monday.  My lower back has been bothering me a little more these past couple of days, but I will get through it.  With that being said, training has been hard, tiring, and all of the above, most of all GREAT!  This is my first year that I will be competing in the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Pan Am and World Championships and I am more than excited, and I can’t wait!!!  The mats have been packed at Lloyd Irvin’s Mixed Martial Arts and I hope it stays that way!

When the BJJ Competition Team class ended early last night, I thought that would give me more time to rest and straighten up my house.  It actually just gave me more time to clean, during the week I feel so busy!  I am typically at the gym from 11 am to 10:30 pm Monday-Thursday, on Fridays I get out around 9:30.  Saturdays, I am at the gym most of the day as well.  So throughout the week, my house gets cluttered with training stuff and on Sunday I have a chance to clean!  Tonight I will definitely be soaking in epsom salt, it really helps my body recover.

In the advanced class this morning, Jon Delbrugge and Malcom, both brazilian jiu-jitsu purple belts came down from Crazy 88 up in Elkridge.  They were training hard and helping out our black belts, Mike Fowler and JT Torres who are getting ready for the upcoming tournaments.  We did several rounds of grip fighting, live rounds of sparring, and positional sparring.

At 4:30 pm we had drilling in the back which included myself, Mike Fowler, Jt Torres, and Jim Harbison.  I got to drill some of the techniques from my favorite position, and I can’t wait to try in tournaments.  The next BJJ tournament that I will compete in will be on March 20th, it’s the Grapplers Quest in New Jersey.  Then of course Pan Ams the weekend of April 8th.  Ours teens/kids have also been training hard and preparing for the upcoming tournaments, especially Worlds.  Check out this video done by Frank Camacho!

Last night, we had a full class!  The mat was packed and we got drilling and sparring in!  Some of the guys came from Evolve, and Crazy 88 which is located up in Elkridge.

Today was Strength and Conditioning with D’ Angelo.  They worked a lot of upper body, then everyone was off to rest until the 4:30 drilling practice.

My day consisted of waking up, soaking in epsom salt, eating breakfast, cooking my lunch and packing my bag for the gym, train, work, train!!  Robbie, one of our purple belts rolled with me.  I rolled 6, 5 min rounds with him, and got my butt whooped, you can’t always win.  Then, I had 4:30 drilling and 8:30 BJJ class.  Tonight class ended short so everyone could rest and not over work their bodies.  More updates tomorrow!  Great Training Team Lloyd Irvin!!!

Brazilian jiu-jitsu training this morning was great!  I did a lot of drilling from different positions, then we worked some arm lock escapes, got some rounds in.  Nakapan Phungeporn, Mike Fowler, JT Torres, Jim Harbison, DJ Jackson, and a few of the other guys did live rounds for a while.  Check out the video below!  I will try to post as much videos as I can of the Training Camp.  Tonight’s class is going to be a great sweat!

Just a reminder, Brandon “The Truth” Vera will be fighting Jon Jones on March 21st in Broomfield, Colorado.  We also have Phil Davis fighting in UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi, this is the first time UFC will be in Abu Dhabi.  Legend, Renzo Gracie will be fighting on that card against Matt Hughes.  There are some good match ups on that card for sure!

Until tomorrow, I am off to train some bjj!

Woke up this morning had a good breakfast and off to Lloyd Irvin’s Mixed Martial Arts I went.  Advanced brazilian jiu-jitsu class started @ 11:30.  BJJ Blue belt Sijara Eubanks and I drilled and then Master Lloyd had us doing live rounds. Physically and Mentally preparing us for real situations.  Sijara and I will both be doing Pan Ams, and Worlds, and definitely getting on that first place stand.

Second bjj training consisted of more drilling, and I also did a few reps on the resistance bands.  I drilled with Dj Jackson, he is also a blue belt, and he recently fought in the Gameness Fighting Championships making his opponent tap due to punches from the mount.  Mike Fowler, JT Torres, Jim Harbison, and Frank Camacho drilled for several rounds as well.  Drilling is a must, so make sure that you find time in your day to drill, DRILL,DRILL!!

Last but not least, we had the 8:30 Advanced BJJ class.  Live grip fighting, live sparring, LIVE LIVE LIVE!  Getting ready for the upcoming tournaments.  We had a full class, and everyone was training hard, Team Lloyd Irvin!

A while back, I was involved in a push up challenge.  I had to record whatever the current news was to verify the date, and record my 40 push ups for 30 days straight.  Because I stuck with it and never gave up, I won a trip to Miami, and I get to bring along 1 guest.  Although, with the up coming tournaments, I will have to hold off on that trip for now!  But I really look forward to doing it in the summer!!!  Until tomorrow, I need to get some rest and get ready for Day 2!!

After watching CNN live for several hours, Hawaii was untouched by a tsunami that was supposed to hit, caused by 8.8 earthquake in Chile  Thank goodness!!  Everyone packed food and water, and headed for the mountains.  Some people simply stayed indoors, while others hung out on the sides of the roads waiting for the tsunami to hit.  Everyone was definitely relieved, and there was no property damage.  Nothing but a few waves that were no bigger than 6 ft.  Scared for my family, it was big relief for me to hear that they were safe and sound.  Family is very important to me, as crazy as they can be, I love them.

For those of you who may not know me, my name is Tracey Goodell and I am a 22 year old Brazilian jiu-jitsu blue belt.  I was born and raised on the North Shore of Oahu, and currently living in Camp Springs, MD.  If you are reading this, and asking yourself why, why am I living here instead of Hawaii?  It is simply because I love brazilian jiu-jitsu, and that’s why I train with the best, Team Lloyd Irvin!  I met Lloyd Irvin black belt, Mike Fowler through jiu-jitsu.  He later brought me to Camp Springs, where I Master Lloyd and everyone else from the team.  I immediately knew that this is where I needed to be, but I was unsure how we’d afford it.  Master Lloyd was such a blessing and helped us out tremendously, he is making my dreams come true.  I had decided to make bjj my life, and I will be the best female competitor.  Getting my black belt and winning the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Championships is so important to me, and my top 2 goals!  I have a total of 5 siblings, 1 brother and 4 sisters.  Raised by an awesome Tutu, Aunty, and Uncle I have come a long way.  I have played soccer my whole life, from AYSO, to high school to college, but I knew jiu-jitsu was what I needed to do.  I have lived in Hawaii, of course, Guam, Oregon, and now Maryland.  Some of the most opposite places you could live in.  I love the beach, I love to play soccer, surf, dive, snorkel, hike, and Jiu-Jitsu of course!  I enjoy anything outdoors and that’s basically it.

Tomorrow is 1st of March, and that only means we are about 3 months away from Worlds.  Pan Ams bjj training camp starts tomorrow!  I can’t wait to see what Master Lloyd has in store for everyone, hardcore training that’s for sure.  After Pan Ams is the New York Open and a whole rack of other tournaments.  I hope you enjoyed reading this blog, and make sure you stay tuned for some great training footage!  You can also keep updated with team news at http://lloydirvinlive.com/blog.
