  • A Lawyer in Long Beach pt 4 : Clash of the Titans
Saturday at the Mundials was the real beginning of the “Clash of the [BJJ] titans.” The junior blue-belts divisions, the purple-belt male and female open divisions, as well as the brown belts and the lighter-weight black belts (my favorite divisions of course) were on the docket. The bullpen, the stands, and the surrounding areas were flooded with BJJ royalt […]
  • A Lawyer in Long Beach pt 3 : Once the Dust Settled
Later in the day we came up with a plan whereby each fighter from Crazy 88 preparing for a fight would be assigned an assistant who had fought the day before, to make sure they had everything they needed. It was an honor to be able to assist, in what little way I could, in a teammates’ preparations. SEVEN (7) Lloyd Irvin competitors became World Champions on […]

  • UFC 114: Rampage v Evans Review by Jon Delbrugge
UFC 114 was a Mayweather style hyped card. Two of MMAs best light heavyweights finally fighting each other after 15 months of well publicized trash talk. • STRIKEFORCE: Heavy Artillery Review
-Jon Delbrugge- In today’s mainstream MMA we have an oversaturation of the blood splattering, lightning bolt, tribal tattoo designed logo appeal to it. I like how Strikeforce is trying something different they are going for the complete opposite. Saturday night’s Heavy Artillery card had different audiences, different fighters, different TV deals. The produc […]

  • Running a Large Martial Arts School vs. a Small One
I’ve had the opportunity to be a student at “small” academies that grew into big ones and also have had the good fortune of watching my own Howard County Martial Arts academy develop into a “big” school as well.  One thing that I’ve noticed is how different it is to run a successful big program vs. . . . → Read More: Running a Large Martial Arts School vs. a […]

Early this morning, following the earthquake that hit Okinawa, and the tsunami warning was called off.  An 8.8 earthquake hit the coast of Chile causing Tsunami warnings for the entire Pacific Basin.  As of 10 am, they said 82 people have been killed so far and the death polls are likely to rise.  But the earthquake didn’t stop there, it had several of aftershocks, including one of magnitude 6.9.  Millions of people were feeling this terrible earthquake that was said to have lasted a good 45.secs -1 min.  It has not yet been determined how much damage was actually done to those on the Coast of Chile.  And this is not the only earthquake to hit Chile, the last one that hit was sometime in the 60’s and it was the largest earthquake ever recorded.

With the earthquake that hit, it sent tsunami warnings toward Hawaii!  Warnings sirens have already gone off in Hawaii and everyone is trying to get to higher grounds.  They were told to pack food for 5-7 days.  At some grocery stores, managers and employees were almost to the point that they were going to put signs up limiting people from buying all the food.  Hopefully nothing major will happen, they have 5 hours to evacuate.  Although, they could be hit with some of the biggest waves since 1964.

The last major earthquake that occurred was when a 7.0 earthquake that hit Haiti.  Completely wiping out Port-Au-Prince and taking the lives of thousands of people, and millions homeless and with no food.  Such a tragedy and a sad thing to watch.

For now I am off to train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and I am keeping a close eye on what’s going on in Hawaii.

This is what we offer here at Lloyd Irvin’s Mixed Martial Arts Academy.  We have a special trainer, D’Angelo Kinard, and he has been helping the school out for years!  He is a specialist in Sports Specific Training, Physique Makeovers, and Youth Fitness.  That is why he the Strength Coach here at Lloyd Irvin’s.  This video below is from the Strength and Conditioning here at the Academy from yesterday morning.

Personal trainers can really help you improve and reach any goal that you are trying to achieve.  You need the proper instruction and a workout that fits your needs.  Anyone can watch a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu technique, or Wrestling take down on youtube, or a DVD.  But you will not fully understand the technique, unless someone is guiding, or teaching it to you personally.  Especially with jiu-jitsu, somethings look so simple, but if you don’t have the correct amount of pressure, the right angle, it could be all wrong.  Technique also applies with weightlifting, if you do it incorrectly, you can definitely injure yourself.

With any workout that you do, the most important thing is Safety First.  While working out, make sure you have the proper equipment.  Many set backs occur because people don’t have the proper equipment.  Warming up, making sure you are hydrated, keep water close by, listening to your body, resting, and recovering.  Make sure and take this in to consideration.

Keep up the Great Training!!!

Training Camp starts Monday!

If you don’t already know, I never used to be a fan of No Gi, after all, I have learned to love it!  The first time competing with Team Lloyd Irvin, I did the 5 on 5 Team Challenge(No Gi).  I won my first 2 matches by submission, and lost my second match to a girl from Renzo Gracie’s team.  Team Lloyd Irvin took first and it was a great experience.  I was so nervous to compete, and I had been out due to a back injury for 8 months.  The Team, kids and adults were very supportive which made me feel comfortable and not as nervous.

Shortly after, I participated in the No Gi Pan Ams and took 1st.  I was really beginning to love No Gi, and I can’t wait for the next Abu Dhabi Trials.  I plan on competing in Abu Dhabi someday, and winning.  On the other hand, I love the Gi and World is still me priority.  I have the Houston Open coming up next weekend, and then after that is Pan Ams.  I am really looking forward to competing in these big tournaments!  This will be my first year competing in the Worlds.  Our Jiu-Jitsu camp for Pan Ams start on Monday, boy are we going to have some good training!  Stay tuned for videos and more!
