  • A Lawyer in Long Beach pt 4 : Clash of the Titans
Saturday at the Mundials was the real beginning of the “Clash of the [BJJ] titans.” The junior blue-belts divisions, the purple-belt male and female open divisions, as well as the brown belts and the lighter-weight black belts (my favorite divisions of course) were on the docket. The bullpen, the stands, and the surrounding areas were flooded with BJJ royalt […]
  • A Lawyer in Long Beach pt 3 : Once the Dust Settled
Later in the day we came up with a plan whereby each fighter from Crazy 88 preparing for a fight would be assigned an assistant who had fought the day before, to make sure they had everything they needed. It was an honor to be able to assist, in what little way I could, in a teammates’ preparations. SEVEN (7) Lloyd Irvin competitors became World Champions on […]

It’s the day after Christmas and I am more than pleased with this year, even though it has gone by so fast.  Today, Master Lloyd held Brazilian jiujitsu training from 1-3 pm and it was absolutely wonderful.  We had a total of 5 black belts on the mat today!!! It was Master Lloyd, Mike Fowler, Master Donnie, Mike Easton, and Wilson Reis.  We had at least 20 or more guys on the mat for a private session.  It’s always good to see a lot of people training, and when we have students and instructors from our affiliate schools.  Students came from Julius Parks Academy; Crazy 88, which is located out in the Baltimore area. Roberto Torralbas who runs Third Law BJJ, and some students from Master Dalla’s School. It was a really good turnout, I wish that students from the affiliate schools came out more often, females too!

Mike Easton, one of Team Lloyd Irvin’s newest black belts always gives a really nice little speech at the end of class before we bow out.  Today, he mentioned that this upcoming year, we are going to take over the WORLD…and Team Lloyd Irvin will!  He always has positive and inspirational things to say. Check out this interview with Mike “THE HULK” Easton after we got done training today!

Wishing everyone a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year.  I have my family here in Camp Springs and there is nothing more I could ask for. Monday we will be back at training and I can’t wait!

I just finished watching the highlight video of the Mendes Brothers and it made my excited for this upcoming year!!!!  I have been here for almost a year now and Master Lloyd has taught me so much.  He is an inspiration to me as well as many other people.  Check out the video below, I saw it before I met him, and I remember watching it over and over.  I was injured at the time and I was not able to train as much.  Although my injury is not as bad as his, but it gave me a drive that I will continue to do Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and I will be the best…in the video Rhadi said if you want to be the best, then you will get around individuals like Lloyd Irvin, WHY? cause he is trying to take the JiuJitsu World to another level….and that’s what I wanted.

I have yet to see Master Lloyd compete, but I can’t wait for that day, because in my eyes, no one can beat him….

Today there was no Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training. My family and I woke up early, and went out to breakfast. I had to hit the bank first and it was crazy! But go figure, the day before Christmas, everything is hectic! Even though it is the Holidays, I need to get my mind right for this upcoming year. If not, the chances of me achieving my goals and winning are going to be slim.

I have been writing down what I need to work on as far as my rolling, what I keep getting caught in and what mistakes I have been making.  One of the main things is protecting hooks from coming in, and Master Lloyd has mentioned it to me many times. Sometimes, when I concentrate on it too much, I break, it’s as if everything I know goes out the window. In yesterdays private jiu jitsu session, I felt great! I was calm and kept in mind to protect the hooks. During my rolls, no one was able to get their hooks in and I was very pleased.

I get lazy when it comes to my back, and I know that it’s because I am so afraid of getting injured. I was out of commission for so long that I don’t even want to risk anything. It’s as if when someone gets to my back, or any position that hurts it, I panic and or just stop all together. I stop defending and then wait until I get to a better position. It’s a very tough obstacle to work around, and I am afraid of one day running into someone who will not allow me to act like that. I am not fully healed and I have no idea when I will be. So until then, I need to be as careful as possible with my back.

I can’t imagine the thought of life without jiu jitsu. The truth is, my life would not be able to go on without it. From time to time I try to take notes, but I don’t do it often, and I don’t study Jiu Jitsu 24/7, but I love the art and I think that’s all that matters.

The last 3 days of training has been awesome, considering I was out all last week.  Today we warmed up with a technique then got straight to rolling. My first partner was Danny Mahoney, then I sparred with Nyjah Easton. During our roll, she got injured and I feel really bad. I heard her knee pop really loud!  We had her taken to the ER to make sure that it’s nothing serious. It’s never a good thing when someone gets hurt on the mats.  She is a 22 yr. old brown belt under Master Lloyd and has been with Team Lloyd Irvin since she was 15.  She initially started out Thai boxing and then started training BJJ.  Her brother is Mike “The Hulk” Easton and he is the current UWC 135lb Champion.  He recently got his bjj blackbelt along with JT Torres and Jay Hayes.  Mike Easton joined Team Lloyd Irvin in 2002. The Easton’s are an inspiration to everyone in the gym and they are great martial artists. They are living proof that at Lloyd Irvin’s Mixed Martial Arts, anything is possible. Everyone who trains under Team Lloyd Irvin and who has goals of achieving their black belt and or winning a World Title can.  As long as they stick to their goals and give it everything they got, Master Lloyd Irvin can make that happen. He is willing to help anyone who has goals and is serious about training. As he did myself…it’s all a working progress.

As far as the Holidays, Master Lloyd gave everyone a break for tomorrow and Christmas. So, that will be my time to finish up all of my last minute things on my shopping list.  Starting up for the New Year, we will be doing some hardcore Brazilian jiujitsu training and I look forward to it. There will be many more World Champions built at Team Lloyd Irvin.
