If you’re looking for MMA in Maryland, look no further. Lloyd Irvin’s Mixed Martial Arts is with out a doubt the best Academy for MMA in Maryland.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-3920 " title="mma in maryland" src="http://www.teamlloydirvinusa.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Team-Lloyd-Irvin-Making-Jiu-Jitsu-History-300x192.jpg" alt="MMA in Maryland"width="240" height="154" />
All we do is win

MMA stands for Mixed Martial Arts. This usually refers to taking the most effective martial arts such as Muay Thai, Boxing, Wrestling, Judo, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and merging them to have a complete understanding of a combat engagement no matter where the fight takes you. the striking arts of Muay Thai and Boxing train you to deliver devastating kick knees punches and elbows. Training Judo and Wrestling to dominate and control whether the fight stays on the feet or goes to the ground, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu the “magic” art form which will allow you to defeat adversary’s that may be bigger, stronger or faster, by using leverage and technique to apply chokes and joint locks to end a fight quickly and efficiently. In an art form where knowledge is key, it’s crucial that you have a qualified instructor who has put in the time on the mats to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the science behind the sport. Master Lloyd Irvin’s has been broken down the most effective techniques and formulated systems to increase learning and effectiveness. These techniques have been tested in battle! Just ask any one of Lloyd Irvin’s roster of mma stars. UFC fighters Phil Davis, Brandon Vera or UFC Bantam weight champion Dominick Cruz. You just cant argue with those results. Master Lloyd Irvin dominates MMA in Maryland!

I’ve always considered my self to be really serious about brazilian jiu-jitsu – serious enough to base my life decisions on allowing me to train as much as possible. These BJJ

<img class="size-full wp-image-3813 " title="Team Lloyd Irvin field trip to meet with Dr. Rhadi Ferguson" src="http://www.teamlloydirvinusa.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/tli.jpg" alt="Lloyd Irvin"width="326" height="245" />
Team Lloyd Irvin field trip to meet with Dr. Rhadi Ferguson

oriented choices led me from a small town in northern California, to the Big Island of Hawaii to train at the gym of the former world champ BJ Penn, to finally train under Team Lloyd Irvin in Camp Springs, Maryland. To some people it may sound ridiculous to move from the home of the greatest light weight fighter ever, to a small residential area in Maryland. And to be sure, training at BJ Penns academy - and sometimes with Bj Penn himself - was an electrifying experience, but with mixed martial arts being the primary focus at the Penn academy, my insatiable hunger for more bjj dominated my thoughts. I wanted to achieve a perpetual cycle, in that my Jiu-jitsu could fuel my livelihood, and subsequently allow me to train more jiu-jitsu! lloyd irvin

Team Lloyd Irvin seemed like the holy grail of the Bjj lifestyle. With the likes of JT Torres and my former white belt training partner from Callifornia Andris Brunovskis, as well as a team of incredible young athletes who all seemed to have the same hunger that I felt for being on the mats all day, I wanted in! I poured over all the information I could find on Team Lloyd Irvin and their achievements. Eventually, out of what felt like desperation (but what I know now is was just my bjj obsessive compulsive disorder), I wrote master Lloyd Irvin with a plea to train with his prestigious team. After a long email correspondence, I had it! That is, permission to see if I had what it took to be apart of Team Lloyd Irvin - and with only slight disapproval from my mother due to my dropping out of college to do it, the shackles of her - and societies - expectation of me to stay in school had been unlocked and allowed me to pursue my dream!

I booked a one way plane ticket and with some warm clothes, a couple of Gi’s and a 15 hour flight, I arrived in Baltimore Maryland where I promptly lost all feeling in my fingers and toes! Coming from the tropical climate of Hawaii, it’s no surprise I didn’t take to the cold well. A After a bus, train, and car ride, I arrived at the Lloyd Irvin MMA academy!

But, with most of the team in Europe bringing home medals from the European Open, It was a slow day at the Lloyd Irvin academy. After a few days of light training and recovering from jet lag, the bulk of the competition team arrived and the real training began. I have never had such a concentrated dose of jiu-jitsu in my life; 5-6 hours a day training in the gi HURTS! But it hurts so good, though my body felt destroyed from gi burn and muscle fatigue. Physically miserable, but emotionally giddy, knuckles bleeding, I would limp into class smiling and wanting more. It can only be described as a cleansing process, ridding my body of soft skin, and the idea that I used to train hard. By the end of the week it felt as if my muscles where turning to goo. After the first “real” week of training, I thought if I had to grip another sleeve I might lose a finger.

Sundays are the Team Lloyd Irvin rest day, so I slept until 2 pm and woke up feeling sore, but ready for another week of the hardest training I’d ever experienced. Essentially, this week focused on grip fighting, which was completely new territory for me – and it showed. My sloppy posture and gripping has improved however and now I can hang without getting destroyed by the abnormally tough blue belts on the team. Around half way through my second week, I noticed my body was handling the meat grinder a little better than the previous week, not quite as sore, not quite as tired. Being able to push past the point where 97% of people would quit is a Team Lloyd Irvin strong point and I’m looking forward to the day when I can push as hard as the juggernaut Dj Jackson and attack triangles as viciously and continuously as Andris Brunovskis.
The training continues!

Another great week for Team Lloyd Irvin all over the globe! Obviously there was the amazing performances at the 2011 European BJJ Championships. Along with the big wins over seas, Daddis Fight Camps (A Team Lloyd Irvin School) chalked up another UFC win in Fort Hood Texas at UFC’s Fight For The Troops 2!

Waylon Lowe was victorious over Willamy Freire Saturday night in his bout at UFC – Fight for the Troops 2. Waylon was able to utilize his superior wrestling to negate his opponent’s attacks, maintaining top control throughout most of the fight while mixing in some powerful ground and pound strikes. His newly added Lloyd Irvin Jiu-Jitsu Systems and Daddis Muay Thai also helped him as he dropped Freire, a former Shooto champion, in the first round with a right hand and with the victory, pushes his record to 10-3 (2-1 in the UFC). Waylon is becoming a well rounded MMA Fighter and is going to be unstoppable! He’s already back at the gym training Muay Thai at Daddis MMA/Team LI Philadelphia with Coban “The Cruncher”, a 2 time Lumpinee Champion living legend of the art.

Brad Daddis’ schools are located in Hamilton, NJ, Cherry Hill, NJ and in Philadelphia. Daddis Fight Camps, along with teamates BJJ United and the rest of the Team Lloyd Irvin crew are killin’ it up here in the Tri-State area and will continue to dominate in 2011. Up next, Wilson Reis’ first round of the Feather Weight season 4 Bellator Tournament along with a slew of ammy and pro fighters competing next week at Locked In The Cage next weekend right here in Philly!

P.S…Stay tuned for more because that was only the first month of 2011! You ain’t seen nothin’ yet! Team LI!!!

No Time to Rest, No Time to Chill.

You’d think that after the 2011 European BJJ Championships there would be at least a few days to rest, but that’s not the case. Team Lloyd Irvin is locked into a MUNDIAL GRIND, pushing the physical limits and mental boundaries in each and every member of famLI.

The night JT “Spiderman” Torres came back from Portugal, he was on the mat, fixing holes and drilling.

The very next morning, our Strength and Conditioning Coach D’Angelo Kinard put us through a full body blast.

At 4:30 PM the Medal Chasers were back up to work on the specific back attack system and situational sparring.

In the nighttime Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class, we had visitors from Leo Dalla’s Academy and split up into groups of six. We were on 7 minute rounds and when the final bell rang we would switch between our respective groups. This went on for over 90 minutes. When it was all said and done, Master Lloyd called for the class to run laps around the main mat. As we ran ML gave us visualizations, motivating the entire group.

This was nothing compared to what he had in store for us the following morning.

PICTURE THIS GRIND SESSION

At 11:30 AM sharp, we bow in and start running. The warm-up is a mix of running variations, grappling exercises, and precise movements.

After a quick stretch, everyone finds a partner and commences the grip fighting. The feet are LIVE, so you have to be prepared for foot sweeps, kouchi gari’s, osoto gari’s, and sasae’s.

We spent 10 minutes jostling for position. The grind was about to begin

First up, 7 minutes with Master Lloyd. Around the gym this is affectionately known as the “ML Beatdown“. If you’ve had the chance to roll with Lloyd Irvin, you know why he’s called Master. ML pulled guard and immediately swept. Once on top he is relentless, crushing your head and constantly attacking your wrists and arms. All movements are futile, any attempt to escape puts you deeper down the hole, until he feels it’s time to finish.

Without a break, you’re put into the jiu jitsu gauntlet. 4 Fresh opponents rotating in every 90 seconds.

The situation is that it’s the finals of the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu World Championships, you’re down and you need a score to win.

The first 3 opponents are trying to pass while you attempt to sweep, submit, or take the back. The 4th round was straight judo with Rhadi Ferguson Grip System Certified, BJJ Black belt, Master Donnie Achnick.

After going through all four adversaries for three consecutive series, the body gets thrown into a state of disorientation. Your head is spinning as you uncontrollably gasp for air. The only thing that keeps you working is the thought of that gold medal around your neck and the only reason you’re putting your body through this chaos is because you know it needs to be done to get on top of that podium.

You know it’s a good grind when you look into the trash can and the first thing you see is blood mixed with the oatmeal you had for breakfast!

After you get yourself together, it time to rep a technique for about 20 minutes straight. This is the best time to drill, the move really sticks when your drop-dead drained.

After the final bow the team claps it up, then daps it up, closing out a ridiculous morning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Class!

Stay posted right here at TeamLloydIrvinUSA.com for more insight on whats going on in Camp Springs!

Everything was sealed off at Lloyd Irvin’s Martial Arts Academy and about fifteen BJJ white belts stood ready for the hardest test of their lives. It was 10 pm Wednesday. Not all would be there when things finished at almost 2 a.m. early Thursday morning.

“You’re going to learn something about yourself tonight,” said Master Donald Achnick, and he was correct.

It was the white belt tryouts for the Team Lloyd Irvin competition team, and what’s involved in the process is a closely guarded secret, but suffice it to say it’s universally considered, by those who have dared enter the crucible, the most grueling and difficult experience of one’s life. If you make it through this you can make it through pretty much anything.

It was all of that. And more.

People cried, people cramped up, people disappeared. There were moments of doubt for me but what pulled me through in addition to the encouragement of those running the tryouts was something deep inside that would not permit me to quit.

I thought of my phone conversation earlier in the evening with Mike Easton, at the WEC weigh-ins in Glendale, Arizona, and his closing words to me: “Dave, don’t quit. Just don’t quit.”

I thought of Master Lloyd’s philosophy, which boils down to: of course we want you to win, but losing happens and is understandable. Quitting is unacceptable. We can’t help a quitter.

At one particularly tough point during the tryouts Jim Harbison mentioned Bob Dylan to me, and I thought of how Dylan has said, “If I’ve been about anything, it’s…to let some people know that it’s possible to do the impossible.”

So I could get kicked out, I could pass out, maybe even die (this didn’t feel like an exaggeration at the time, and even with hindsight I’m not sure it is), but I would not choose to leave. I wouldn’t have been able to handle it psychologically had I left of my own accord.

As the remaining white belts stood at close to two in the morning, I was among them — I had made the competition team.

It’s not easy for me to describe how much pride I take in surviving this test. Maybe the best way to express it is to say that I’m prouder of myself for having survived this than I am of any previous accomplishment: academic awards as an undergrad and law student, writing judicial opinions for a judge on the Third Circuit Court of Appeals, it all pales in comparison.

I did indeed learn a lot about myself during those four hours. I might have thought I could make it through something like this, but that’s not something you can know without actually doing it. More than conditioning, it takes mental toughness. I’m inspired to push even harder, to follow my delusion — to let a whole bunch of people know that it’s possible to do the impossible.

I took second place in light-heavyweight (180-189.9 lbs) Masters (30-39 years old) at NAGA NJ in Newark this past weekend. I’m happy with my progress as this was my best ever finish and I’ve made significant improvements since my last tournament about half a year ago.

There were four competitors in my division and my first match was to see who would move on to the finals. It began with my opponent attempting to pull guard, at which point I was on top for a very short time before getting swept.

I was on my back and would probably have remained there the entire time but luckily Al “Big Sal” Washington was in my corner coaching me. A couple of things I’ve had trouble with in the past is controlling my breathing and being able to hear and listen to my coaches. In earlier tournaments, my head was just exploding with thoughts of don’t lose, and it was hard for me to make out any coaching directions. Breathing, which is a natural phenomenon, is also something I had to learn to do consciously during my matches, to prevent myself from holding my breath and gassing.

I was pleased that I was breathing well and could hear Al perfectly, even though I was on the bottom and my opponent was working a ch0ke. He only had one of my arteries, and I knew I was OK as he squeezed and squeezed, and it was just a matter of time before his arms gave. They eventually did give way, and I could feel him break.

I followed Al’s instructions and performed a back escape and ended up in my opponent’s guard, which I quickly passed and I proceeded to take his back. I got into full mount and the fight ended with me going for an armbar and my opponent holding on until time was called. Al was screaming for me to lift my hip, but I just couldn’t do it, and I won on points.

I lost the gold medal match on points, but it was a good fight. My opponent had a number of blood chokes on me and was visibly perplexed when I would neither tap nor go to sleep. This eventually wore him down mentally, he also gassed physically, and I was on top passing guard when time ran out.

NAGA was another great learning experience and I encourage my teammates who have yet to compete to do so at the earliest opportunity.

My first fight was caught on video:

One of the great things about training at Camp Springs is getting the chance to witness the progression of the next generation of MMA stars. There are several guys in their late teens and early 20s who will be making statements in the sport before too long. Many of them could be fighting at the highest levels right now, but Master Lloyd is like a scientist, and takes his time putting together his fighting machines. Every so often I’ll dedicate space in the blog to featuring an interview with one of these future stars. Today’s interview is with the Ram Man, DJ Jackson.

DJ turned twenty-two last week, and in the words of Mike “The Hulk” Easton, he “could be beasting in UFC right now.” He’s a juggernaut, a ground ‘n pound specialist, and a future star.

What brought you to Team Lloyd Irvin?

I came to Team Lloyd Irvin during the wrestling off-season because I knew TLI had a great wrestling program run by Jim Kelly, and it would be the perfect spot to train and better my skills as I continued to wrestle in college.

Did you have any background in martial arts?

I had a wrestling background. I started wrestling my freshman year of high school and fell in love with it.
I wasn’t great at wrestling when I first started but with a lot of hard work and perseverance I was able to get a college scholarship where I continued my wrestling career.

Master Lloyd awarded you your purple belt this past summer. What titles have you won since then?

I won double gold at no-gi worlds, I won no-gi pan ams and I’m looking to continue training to get a gi world championship.

What are your goals in Brazilian jiu jitsu and do you have a time-frame in mind for reaching them?

No time frame but I want to be a black belt world champion and I want to win Abu Dhabi as well.

How many MMA fights have you had?

I’ve had two fights and won both of them with finishes. I love to fight for finishes.

Would you say your ultimate goal is the UFC and the lightweight title?

YES. I want to be remembered as one of the best fighters of all time!

In your mind, how long before we see “Ram Man” in UFC?

I don’t know. I have the best trainer and coach in Master Lloyd Irvin and whenever he says I’m ready, I know I am ready!

What’s the best part of being a member of Team Lloyd Irvin?

There is no single best thing — everything about being a member of TLI is great. We are a family. We bleed, sweat, and put our bodies on the line for one goal: TO BE THE BEST IN THE WORLD!
