Team Lloyd Irvin Taking Over the World(s)

It’s an exciting time at Lloyd Irvin’s Martial Arts Academy with so much going on it’s probably hard for Master Lloyd to keep track of it all himself.  For starters, Fight! Magazinenamed LIMAA the #15 MMA school in the country; in a list dominated by schools in Las Vegas and other MMA “Meccas,” LIMAA was the only academy in the region to be so honored.

It’s easy to see why LIMAA is among the elite.  At UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi, future UFC light heavyweight superstar Phil “Mr. Wonderful” Davis, with Master Lloyd in his corner, put on a clinic as he finished his opponent in the first round with an anaconda choke.  As UFC 112 took place in Abu Dhabi, Team Lloyd Irvin competitors were tearing things up in California at the Pan American BJJ tournament.  Team Lloyd Irvin captured a number of medals, with Tracey Goodell and Willie Leonard leading the way by taking gold in both their respective blue belt divisions and then again in the Absolutes.  Then, in the New York International Open last week, Team Lloyd Irvin took second overall team and dominated to such an extent that it’s not practical to name individuals — the list would go on and on.  AAAYYY!!!!

Ron Stallings, Timothy Woods, Justin Hicky and UWC bantamweight champion Mike “The Hulk” Easton are now in fight camp preparing for battles on May 22 at the GMU Patriot Center.  Also training in Camp Springs is Ultimate Fighter season 11 star Kris “Savage” McCray and Bellator’s Wilson Reis.  I was lucky enough to attend a sparring session that included all the above fighters (along with some others) this past Wednesday, and it was a sight to behold.  Just brutal.  Nothing was held back.  I watched as Wilson Reis repeatedly punched Mike Easton, but for each punch Mike would return a kick, again, with nothing held back.   
 
D’Angelo Kinard, working with TLI’s pro fighters, has taken their strength and conditioning to a whole other level, and the guys are saying they’ve never felt so good in their lives.  The famLI fighters are ready for anything that might come their way.  Several are training for the muay thai nationals in June, with preparation fights scheduled for May 15 at Jeff Ruth’s school.  Right now we have famLI in Brazil (including black belts Master Mike Fowler and JT Torres) for Brasileiros, after which they’ll be back in Camp Springs training for June’s BJJ world title competition.  There’s almost literally no place you can turn in the fight world where you won’t see Team Lloyd Irvin:  The grappling team of the decade is taking over the world(s)! 
 
One thing that’s important to note is that although LIMAA is an elite MMA institution, it’s not a home only for elite fighters — in fact, it’s not a home only for fighters.  All kinds of people train at LIMAA, from high school students with dreams of becoming MMA fighters one day to young and not-so-young adults with goals ranging from those who wish to fight to those who wish only to get in shape.  I walked into LIMAA “off the street,” a 36-year-old non-practicing attorney who had never taken a martial arts class in my life.  Not only that, I basically have two left feet and probably learn as slowly as anyone in the school.  It doesn’t matter, though, With the help of LIMAA’s incredible instructors (I’m not going to name them for fear of leaving someone out, but they’re uniformly top-rate) I’ve improved dramatically in everything.  Further, I joined the combat gold program around November, and that’s been an eye-opening experience, especially the two or so months as famLI prepared for last month’s Pan American tournament.
 
It’s no wonder we did so well — nobody could have trained harder than Team Lloyd Irvin for the competition.  I attended the two-hour plus afternoon combat gold sessions, but those training for the Pan Ams had two or three more sessions per day.  I again stress the best part of this from my perspective: I’m a white belt, a low-level one at that, and I got to roll with, watch, and learn from top level men and women, blue belts through black belts.  I want to compete so I push myself as hard as possible, and if I’m doing it, really, anyone can do it if they set their minds to it.  But like I said, LIMAA is not just for people with competition goals.  There are guys who started last summer with me, who have no desire to compete, who only wanted to get into shape.  And they have all made amazing progress over the last eight or ten months.  Really, whatever your goals, if you’re looking for physical activity and are not afraid to work hard LIMAA is for you.

Training at Crazy 88

MASTER LLOYD IS LEAVING TOMORROW TO VEGAS, PHIL DAVIS MAKES HIS MMA DEBUT IN THE UFC 109.

TODAY LLOYD IRVINS MIXED MARTIAL ARTS WAS CLOSED FOR CLASSES BECAUSE OF THE SNOW. A FEW OF THE GUYS CAME IN TO TRAIN THIS MORNING. WE DID A LOT OF DRILLING WHICH IS ALWAYS NECESSARY!!! AFTER THAT WE DID ROUNDS OF ROLLING. I GOT THE CHANCE TO ROLL WITH CEDRIC BRYANT, ONE OF OUR NEWEST BLUE BELTS. IT WAS A GREAT ROLL.

TONIGHT THERE WAS NO BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU CLASS IN CAMP SPRINGS. MIKE FOWLER, WILLIE LEONARD, FRANK CAMACHO, DJ JACKSON AND I DROVE UP TO TRAIN AT CRAZY 88. IT’S OUR AFFILIATE SCHOOL UP IN ELKRIDGE.
