Team Lloyd Irvin in UFC

With the announcement of the imminent UFC/WEC merger, I wanted to look at UFC’s current crop of Team Lloyd Irvin fighters.

Dominick Cruz (16-1) — Dominick is UFC bantamweight champion with a title defense upcoming against Scott Jorgensen on December 16, 2010, on the last ever WEC show.  Dominick has earned his “Dominator” nickname by being unstoppable as a bantamweight (his sole professional loss coming as a featherweight), with his opponents uniformly unable to deal with or adjust to Dom’s hand and foot speed.  Speed kills and it’s brought Dom to the top of his division.

Brandon Vera (11-5) — A five-year UFC veteran, Brandon debuted for the organization with a win over Fabiano Scherner on October 3, 2005.  Brandon was at one point top contender for the UFC heavyweight championship, but a contract dispute prevented him from getting a title shot.  Brandon’s now a light-heavyweight and is scheduled to fight Thiago Silva on January 1, 2011, at UFC 125.  After a tough loss to UFC phenom Jon Jones and a controversial one to legend Randy Couture, a win over Thiago should get Brandon back on track towards the title.

Phil Davis (7-0) — Phil, an NCAA wrestling champion, might be Team Lloyd Irvin most pedigreed professional mixed martial artist.  Phil won a unanimous decision over Brian Stann at Phil’s UFC debut on February 6, 2010, at UFC 109, and is scheduled to face Tim Boetsch later this month at UFC 123.  Phil reminds me a lot of Georges St. Pierre, in both physique and fighting style, and I expect to see him wearing UFC gold in 2012 or 2013.
