Mike Fowler vs Marcio Silva.
When I first saw this match back in 2008, in Hawaii. I had no idea who Mike Fowler was, let alone Team Lloyd Irvin. During this match, Mike Fowler hits the sweep that Xande did in the Art Suave DVD. Keeping your base is just one of the fundamentals that is so important in jiu-jitsu, definitely something I need to work on. I really had no idea about jiu-jitsu. In fact, as embarrassing as it is, I was a blue belt and had no clue about jiu-jitsu. That is why I think it is so important to take pride in what you do. Study your Mixed Martial Art, take the time to learn it’s history. In my case, I just entered a tournament in Aug. 2006 on a whim and took first place. After about 6 months, I stopped training all together and didn’t get back into BJJ until July 2008. Back in full action, I am so thankful for art and I am proud to say that I train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

If you are in the Maryland, DC, or Virginia area, don’t stop training or thinking about Mixed Martial Arts. Hopefully most of you were able to catch the UFC 109 last night when Randy Couture choked out Mark Coleman. Phil Davis, who made his MMA debut last night, won by unanimous decision, and absolutely dominating his opponent. Congrats to Phil and I can’t wait to see him fight again soon, check out what he had to say after his fight!!!
We are in the two weeks of preparation for the guys who will be fighting in Tennessee on Feb. 20. The last time the guys trained as a group was on Friday, and since then have been completely snowed in. Eager to train and get a workout, I am sure they are getting in any workout possible. They have been working hard on their wrestling, jiu-jitsu and most importantly, their strength and conditioning. With no workout equipment and about 3 ft of snow blocking his car, check out JC Cuffee while he gets a quick run in to the store, anyway to get a workout and sweat!
Today, I was instructed to watch at least an hour of footage on Terere, if not more, and I did. I enjoy watching Jiu-Jitsu videos, I am going to make it a routine to watch them more often….just like my BJJ teammate Frank “The Crank” Camacho. He had mentioned that he is going to watch at least 1 Black Belt match a night, which gives me a great idea…….to be announced…..
How often are you watching or studying jiu-jitsu matches? Maybe not enough, so get on it and make it a habit. Even if you are watching techniques on youtube, more knowledge won’t hurt.
Go TEAM LLOYD IRVIN
LLOYD IRVIN MIXED MARTIAL ARTS STILL CLOSED!
Last night, I was watching episodes from the UFC when it first started back in 1993 when Royce Gracie’s was dominating in the UFC. It’s amazing to see the improvements of the sport and the changes it has had throughout the last 17 yrs. It is now one of the most watched sports on T.V. Mixed Martial Arts itself is just growing rapidly and soon I am sure MMA will be the number one sport in the World.
Royce Gracie has the longest no holds barred matches and beat 4 opponents in one night. If you think about it, how many fighters do you now days that could possibly do that? And, back then, all the rules that they have now were not applied. Now days in the UFC, you have to wear gloves, no kick and knees to the while on the ground and the list can go on and on. The sport was so raw, it really kept you on your toes! Speaking of UFC, Phil Davis makes his MMA debut tonight! Make sure to check it out, and to get live updates, become of fan of Lloyd Irvin at LLOYDIRVINFANS.COM

One last thing before I go and enjoy the snow outside!! I want to Thank Master Marcos Avellan and Jason for helping me achieve my goal. I jumped in on their push up challenge and I made it to the end. Yesterday made 30 days of push ups, I did 40 daily. It was really a goal within myself that I wanted to achieve. I wanted to see if I would slack off and get lazy. Of course there were those days when I was out of town, but I still got the job done! The rules were that you had to upload your video by midnight every day, and to verify the correct date, you also had to film whatever the latest new was in the world. I mainly stuck to CNN. If Jason or myself missed 1 day, we owed Master Marcos $50. If Master Marcos missed 1 day, he owed us $1,000. In the end we both received a prize for hanging in there. I won a FREE Trip to MIAMI and Jason gets to fly with Master Marcos to his next fight and help him corner. We also get to have dinner with him and a private lesson. I have never won anything like this before and I am more than Thankful. So once again, Thank You MM!
FYI: Lloyd Irvin’s Mixed Martial Arts is closed. More than likely we will be closed Monday as well. Hopefully, the snow gets cleared up and we will be able to open up on Tuesday. Missing training is not good, especially at this time of the year, everyone is getting ready for BJJ Pan Ams, and Worlds. If you are unable to do some Jiu-Jitsu, watch videos, read articles, drill on your floor! Maybe it’s time to invest in some mats, and put them in your basement for days like these when you are snowed in!!
Today is my final day of the push up challenge. It all started from Marcos Avellan and Jason from Team FFA. They had both started before, when I saw the challenge I thought that it would be a good idea to join. So without telling them, I just recorded my push ups and sent it to Marcos. Without thinking that he would officially add me to the challenge, he did! Well, Marcos Avellan and Jason have done a great job along with myself, there were even some days when I did more than 40. Sometimes I miscalculated the push ups, my battery died, computer issues, but I got them done and it was a great challenge.
Keep up the hard training and be safe, especially if you are in the weather that we are in here in Camp Springs. Also, for more info about Team Lloyd Irvin, check out www.lloydirvinlive.com
Here is my match from the Semi-Finals against Sofia Amarante, she is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu brown belt. She fights out of South Florida Fight Club. She recently beat Leticia Ribeiro in No GI Worlds, 2009. Sofia won the BJJ Gi Worlds as a purple belt and got promoted to her brown.
When I saw her name in the bracket I was very nervous! On top of that, my coach was all the way in Portugal with Mike Fowler and JT Torres. So I pulled it together and kept focused.
I had her in a triangle and finished her with a straight arm lock. I was very excited that I had won the match and was now in the finals. Next, I had Hillary Williams, I lost to her placing 2nd at the Abu Dhabi Pro Trials. Check out my match with Sofia below.
This weekend, we are getting hit with a big snow storm. I will keep you updated if we are open or not. We go by PG County School Schedule, so if the schools are closed, Lloyd Irvin’s Mixed Martial Arts will be as well. Have a safe weekend! If you are being affected by the Snow Storm, find a way to get in some Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Training!!
